Friendswood Development Company, the developer of Graystone Hills, Conroe's only master-planned community, welcomed members of the Conroe Ladies Association.

Guests toured the beautiful wooded Graystone Hills community and decorated models by Trendmaker Homes, D.R. Horton Homes, Village Builders, Meritage Homes and Lennar.

The event included an update on Graystone Hills, its sales success and a catered luncheon.

Coldwell Banker United, Realtors has gathered all of its Woodlands-area real estate agents together into a new facility.

The 90 agents — from the broker’s Grogan’s Mill and Research Forest offices — cover The Woodlands as well as northwest Harris and southern Montgomery counties.

Coldwell Banker’s combined office, located at 4225 Research Forest Dr., also houses Access Title.

Residents of South Montgomery County will now be able to receive health care through Memorial Hermann Woodlands Hospital.

Tuesday The Montgomery County Hospital District board authorized an agreement to bring MCHD's Health Care Assistance Program into the hospital. The district also has a provider agreement with Conroe Regional Medical Center and recently even added Cleveland and Tomball.

In a statement to MCHD board members, MCHD CEO Allen Johnson said "This is a big move," and that"In the 11 or 12 years since I’ve been here, we’ve not had Memorial Hermann as an option for indigent patients." "This is a major accomplishment, especially for those living in South County."

New State Law: No Cell Phones in School Zones

Graystone Hills residents should be wary when driving through Conroe I.S.D.'s and other schools' school zones, as a new state law will prohibit the use of wireless communication devices while operating a vehicle in a school zone. Violators must pay a fine of up to $200 per violation.

House Bill 55 is set to take effect on September 1, and is intended to promote the safety of students. The law will be in full affect in all of Texas.

A few facts about the law:

  • Provisions under the law will allow drivers to use cell phones in school zones with a hands-free device or when their vehicle is stopped.
  • School bus drivers will be affected, too.
  • The law is an amendment of the Texas Transportation Code, section545.425.
  • An additional exception is provided in emergency situations, when a driver needs to use a cell phone in a school zone to contact police, fire, or emergency medical personnel.

We beg Graystone Hills residents to heed this new law, as it is designed with the safety of you and your children in mind!

Tess Wergeland won $1,000 from Graystone Hills. Wergeland picked up a drawing form at the community's display in The Woodlands Mall and returned it to one of the builder sales offices in the community to be eligible for the drawing. Just in time for back to school shopping! Congrats Tess!

See Miss Saigon at the Owen Theatre in Conroe

Those looking for a taste of theater are in luck.  The musical, Miss Saigon will be performed by the Crighton Players at the Owen Theatre at 225 Collins St. in Conroe.

The musical is set during the Vietnam War and tells the tale of an American GI and a young girl in Saigon.  Claude-Michel Schonberg composed the musical score with lyrics by Alain Boubil and Richard Maltby, Jr.  The musical was nominated for 11 Tony awards and has a captivating love story and musical score and envelopes the audience within its world.

The story of Miss Saigon revolves around an American soldier during the Vietnam war named Chris and a young barmaid, Kim.  Their love blossoms during the end of the war.  The story is one of the traditional star-crossed lovers who pledge to be together even though their countries won't allow it.  The musical spans years of their lives as the musical score sweeps and tells the tale of their drama.

Texas kids are getting ready to go back to schools, and for many children, preparation includes getting a few more immunizations. This year, big changes have been made in immunization requirements which will impact incoming kindergarten and seventh grade students.

The changes to the requirements were made to bring Texas into line more closely with what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Advisory committee on Immunization Practices recommend. These changes started on August 01 and include:
  • Hepatitis A Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine.
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubelle (MMR) Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of the MMR vaccine.
  • Varicella (chickenpox) Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten and 7th grade will be required to have two doses of the Varicella vaccine. However, a written statement from the parent/guardian, school nurse or physician attesting to the child already having had chickenpox  may replace the vaccine.
  • Tetanus, Diptheria and acellular pertussis-containing Vaccine (Tdap): All students entering 7th grade will be required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine. Students in the 7th grade are required to have a booster shot of Tdap only if it has been five years since their last dose. Students in grades 8-12 are required to have a booster shot of Tdap if it has been ten years or more since their previous dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine.
  • Meningococcal Vaccine: All students entering 7th grade will be required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine.

Conroe Kids Get Ready for School

Parents who can not afford back to school clothes for their children this fall have no need to worry. A group of volunteers with the Assistance League of Montgomery County, located at 126 N. San Jacinto in Conroe, is going through the annual "Operation School Bell". This volunteer effort has the goal of clothing 4,100 school children by August 24th. In addition to that, the program also provides books for any children in need.

This program should help raise the self esteem of new students, who walk into classrooms wearing new, nice clothes for class. Margery Hayward, Operation School Bell chairwoman and Assistance League of Montgomery County president-elect adds, "We think it improves and helps the esteem of the child if they are dressed properly for school like their peers," and "we're dressing them so they can walk through the front doors the first day of school with brand-new clothes on."
