Kids Help YMCA Raise $20K From Trail Run

The sixth annual YMCA Trail Run was recently held to benefit the YMCA Leap of Faith Program.

Over 400 runners and walkers from Greater Houston and from all over Montgomery County participated in helping the Leap of Faith Program. The program is an equine-assisted therapeutic riding program dedicated to serving riders with disabilities and special needs.

The Trail Run included a one-mile kid’s race, 5k race and 3k walk, following horse trails through the YMCA Camp Owen, located on 100 wooded acres adjacent to the Conroe Family YMCA. A complete listing of results and photos are available online at www.ymcatrailrun.org.

The Woodlands Recreation Center recently published their exciting summer calendar which features special programs for all ages! Many of the “camps” are geared towards educational enrichment through physical activities!

Activities planned throughout the summer range from stand-up paddling and country western dancing to LEGO Robotics. “There are hundreds of programs of all types,” said Chris Nunes, Director of Parks & Recreation for The Woodlands Township. “We have designed programs for all ages, both from a fun perspective and an educational opportunity.”

One of the centers most unique offerings is Little iKids programs, which teach area youngsters ages 3 to 7, to explore and expand their technical knowledge. Activities offered in this program include LEGO Robotics, where children construct their own digital storybook by building robot characters, adding music and narrating with their own voice; PC Pet Shop, which teaches basic pet care through computer and keyboard activities; and the popular Dinotunes Digital Discovery, which teaches basic music skills through archeologically themed activities.

Boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 13 (as of September 1, 2010) are invited to join in on the endless Camp FunQuest adventures available this summer at the Oscar Johnson Jr. Community Center or the CK Ray Recreation Center.

Each day will be overflowing with activities such as games, sports, hiking, swimming, crafts, skits, songs and special programs, all while under the close supervision and guidance of trained FunQuest staff (10:1 camper/staff ratio).

The fun doesn’t stop there! Each session includes camper field trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays with adventures such as skating, bowling, movie time, the Houston Zoo, Gospel Lakes, the Oil Ranch and more.
